Special thanks to Claire for spending the best part of year organising and John for planning the eleven different courses, suitable for all ages and different abilities. He was assisted by Colin as the safety controller.

The flooded streams meant we had to shorten the Yellow course on the day to protect the juniors running it. Everyone else had a bit of wading to do as well as running.

Club helpers turned out in force to make sure everyone got to their Start and back again: Roddy, Jim, Rab, Phil, Les, Heather, Jayne, Jane, Gordon, Pauline, Craig, Robin, Sheila, Sharon, Sara, Ian, Lucy and Matthew.

Controller's Comments

Well done to KFO and a very hardy band of volunteers who braved the elements today to stage a very successful event in Devilla Forest. Special thanks go to the planner John Emeleus who put in a huge amount of time and effort into planning an excellent set of courses across the board and at all technical levels.  John was very receptive to the various suggestions I made following my forays into the forest including shortening some of the longer courses and moving courses from Green downwards out of some of the rougher forest in the northwest.  Short Blue and upwards could/should cope with this terrain and while the vegetation masked the shape of the ground the obvious hilltop (control 112) was a fair control site.  We could not have predicted the amount of overnight rain which flooded out many of the marshes, one of which was deemed dangerous (though canny runners avoided the worst).  Competitors on Black and Brown had to contend with a short swim to reach control 152 if they were unlucky.  On the morning of the event it was decided to cut out three controls on the Yellow Course.  The easy path run was underwater in places and with the adjacent ditch varying from a foot to a yard deep (impossible to tell under the turgid brown water) this was definitely the correct decision.  A control was removed from the Orange course which gave runners a safe crossing option via a track run but with a marshal in place near the weir most if not all competitors elected to cross near the control site.  John is commended for setting his alarm very early and heading out into the forest with his headtorch to wake controls up – all done except the far northeast so thank you Oleg for waking them up even if you did expect to waft your SIAC in the near vicinity.  Devilla is rough and tough so well done to everyone for their kind remarks and comments on reaching the finish line.

The results for Green, Orange and Yellow are here

Thank you to everyone who came to our KFO orienteering event at Beveridge Park.

The competition was fast and furious with just a few seconds between many of the competitors.

Please note that the first control on the Green course was not placed correctly by the organiser. This means that we have removed the first leg from the calculation of the overall race result for Green.

Well done to the people at their first ever orienteering who all did spectacularly well.

Thank you to the large number of helpers from KFO who set up and cleared up the event, especially John Campbell who planned the courses for the first time.

Results:  Simple Results   and the Split times, WinSplits Online   You can check how well you did over each leg of your course compared to other people.

We would also encourage you to look at Routegadget. Routegadget allows you to draw the route you took so you can compare it to other people. It also lets you look at the other courses that were on offer. If you ran on Yellow, for example, you might want to look at Orange to see what you would have been faced with and think how you would have approached it.

It was our biggest event of the year. We were pleased to welcome club members from the whole of the east of Scotland as well as families and individuals trying orienteering for the first time. We also welcomed Chris Smithard who is one of the best orienteers in the whole UK.

We enjoyed playing host to the event and hope everyone had a wonderful autumn day.

Great orienteering at Duloch and Calais Muir Wood

We had a fabulous day of orienteering at Duloch in Dunfermline on Saturday. Early starters were bathed in sunshine. Later starters ran fast to finish before the rain started.

Special thanks to Ian for planning, John and Claire for organising, and to the club helpers who made the day possible.

Special congratulations to the juniors who have been on our introduction to orienteering sessions in March and April. They took part in their first ever competition. We were also delighted to welcome friends from nearby clubs, from St Andrews University and local people from the area.

The split results are here.

Routegadget is here. We encourage everybody to have a go at plotting their runs on Routegadget, to share in the fun. It will also help the coaches to plan for future sessions. Some details of how to use it are here
